Which Game of Thrones Weapon Do Fans Like Best?

By Adelia Ladson

“Game of Thrones” is a battle from start to finish, which means its characters always have incredible weapons. Each weapon is an inherent part of the character and is perfectly suited to its owner. The weapons, like the characters, are of all shapes and sizes with distinguishing features. Like many fans of the “Game of Thrones” saga, I have my favorite denizen of the world created by George Martin and visualized by HBO. But, I was thinking, what is my favorite weapon? Is it the same as my favorite character? If I had to choose a “Game of Thrones” weapon to carry, which one would it be? Then, I started wondering, out of all of the weapons we have, which is truly the fans’ favorite.

Ice Sword
Ice Sword
The first weapon you have to consider is the first weapon of the series that makes an impressive appearance: Ice the Sword of Eddard Stark. This great-sword is made of the scarce and valuable Valyrian Steel and is an heirloom of the House of Stark. The Lord of Winterfell carried it in battle and used it in ceremony. Its last task was to take its own lord’s head, when he is wrongfully executed for treason. This is a massive weapon built for battle, measuring an overall length of 57-1/2 inches. In the end, its size leads to its demise as it is cannibalized for its Valyrian steel. Two longswords are forged from it and given to sons of the House of Lannister.

Oathkeeper

So, this brings us to Oathkeeper, now carried by the woman-knight, Brienne of Tarth. Forged from Valyrian steel, it is one of the longswords forged from the destruction of Ice. This sword starts out its journey in the hands of Jaime Lannister, the Oathbreaker, and is given a new life in the hands of the noble Brienne, when he gives it to her. She is the one who gives this sword its name and uses it to try and, unsuccessfully, protect Eddard Stark’s daughter, Sansa. This magnificent longsword is completely Lannister-styled with its golden lion’s head pommel and inset rubies.

Longclaw Sword

Another impressive sword crafted of Valyrian steel is Longclaw, a bastard sword or hand-and-a-half sword, carried by Jon Snow of the Night’s Watch. This mighty weapon was an heirloom of the House of Mormont before passing to Eddard Stark’s illegitimate son. When the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch gives the sword to Jon, he has the original bear-shaped pommel replaced with a pommel in the shape of a direwolf’s head, the sigil of the House of Stark. This sword sees battle outside the Wall in service of the Night’s Watch and is Jon’s constant companion in his fight to survive in the icy wild.

drogo arakh

A weapon that sees action in a much hotter environment is the Arakh wielded by Khal Drogo. Unlike the other swords, it is curved like a sickle and is akin to the Egyptian Khopesh. This weapon is the standard weapon used by the Dothraki, who use it with incredible speed and agility while on horseback. Unfortunately, it couldn’t save its master, Drogo, from the witch who takes her revenge on him. Like other weapons in the series, this one look exactly like it belongs in its Bedouin-styled environment.

Needle Sword

Last but not certainly not least is the slender, yet deadly, Needle of Arya Stark. Given to her by her half-brother, Jon Snow, it was specifically smithed to suit her stature. This is a weapon that is more of a rapier than a sword with its 22 1/2”castle-forged steel blade. Arya learns to fight using the Water Dance style, which is a fencing form of sword fighting that fits the lithe sword and girl perfectly. This may not be a massive blade like Ice but Arya has found it to be lightning fast at running her enemies through.

All of these weapons are pretty awesome, so, I asked the folks, here, in our Contact Center to help, because they are big-time fans of the show, just like me. Even though they were incredibly busy giving excellent service to our call-in customers, they took a couple of minutes to put their votes in for their favorite “Game of Thrones” weapon. And the winner was: Khal Drog’s Arakh.

Which one is yours?
