KNIFE FAQS

  • What does full-tang mean?
The tang of a knife is the part of the blade that extends into the handle. A full-tang knife has the handle pieces or scales attached to each side of the tang to form the handle of the knife. Bowie and Bushcraft knives are typically full tang to better stand up to harsh use when compared to a partial tang or folding knife. In contrast, a half-tang knife has a tang that only extends halfway into the handle. Check out our highly rated Full Tang Bowie Knives/Daggers
  • What is an OTF knife?
OTF is an abbreviation of “out the front”. This refers to how the knife is deployed; rather than rotating open like a traditional pocket knife, it will spring or slide out of the front of the handle. This helps the knife deploy quickly and only requires one hand to operate. You can shop our wide selection of OTF Knives here.
  • Where did the butterfly knife come from?
Also known as a balisong, the butterfly knife got its start in the Philippines as a self-defense and utility pocket knife. It gained popularity in the United States when soldiers returned from the Philippines after W.W.II. and has gained even more notoriety as people enjoy learning ‘tricks’ for opening and closing them. • How to sharpen knives?
Knife sharpening can be accomplished with different tools depending on how sharp you want your knife and what you are using it for. Easier sharpening systems utilize carbide and ceramic blades angled in a plastic housing to sharpen both sides of the blade at once (first you sharpen on the carbide blades and then finish on the ceramic). These work great and fast (as well as being less expensive), but to get your blade “shaving sharp” you want to use whetstones from lower to higher grit counts. The grit is the size of the particles in the stone, which affects the finish on your blade – a finer grit gives you a finer finish. You want to hold the knife at a consistent angle and make sure to sharpen both sides of the blade. A leather strop can be used to deburr the blade after the whetstones and hone it until it is razor sharp. Click here to see all of our Knife Sharpeners and Accessories. A knife will serve you well for many years if you keep it properly sharpened. Also, a blunt or dull knife requires more pressure to use, which opens the door to it slipping and causing injury.
  • What does “feed your blade” mean?
It means that to maintain your knife, you should coat it with a clear, non-organic oil to prevent moisture from reaching the blade when storing. Moisture on the blade can lead to corrosion and rust. A light oil-like gun oil works perfectly but it should be changed regularly by wiping the blade clean with a soft cloth until dry and applying more.

    Blown Away

I took a small chance on this one and I was blown away. This knife is built tough and looks great. I went the extra mile and had the name of my business engraved on the blade just for cool as the both the gun and knife will be displayed on my wall. The bayonet and the engraving were great. I'll be ordering another just like it along with a few others tomorrow evening. If you're thinking about buying it DO IT...but wait until I do 1st. They really are that good and priced ridiculously low. Excellent deal!!

    Beautiful piece of art

This dagger looked interesting so I ordered one for my collection. When I received it and opened it I was blown away at the beauty and craftsmanship of this dagger. Within 2 minutes I said to myself I want another one of these so I ordered one more. The pictures of this in the catalog do not do it justice and I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed

    Phenomenal

Great Knife, The Damascus steel is beautiful, when it came I wasn’t expecting it to be razor sharp out of the box. This is one beautiful monster of a knife. The knife is extremely well made, it has such a solid feel and weight. Can’t wait until I take this bad boy hunting. I also purchase it’s brother, same knife except it’s polished steel. Timber Rattler Western Outlaw Bowie Damascus is an awesome buy. I just saw a very similar knife in Damascus steel and they wanted $ 429.99 in my Gun Store, right then and there I was very happy I picked up this knife from BUDK, and now I have it’s brother as well. Can’t go wrong with knife.

Looks great - Handles even better

I looked this set over online many times. Having been in the military over 20 years, I had owned a K-Bar and used it quite often for just about everything. A magazine I get on occasion, VFW, advertised a K-Bar that could be personalized. I purchased two to be given to my two sons. I was skeptical about their quality due to the low price but was pleasantly surprised when they arrived. So I decided to take a chance on this set of K-Bar & sword. When it arrived, I took it out back and beat up a few logs that were laying aside for my fire pit. I would hate to ever be a log under this as it will make quite the impression (and cut) on just about anything. I have since shown my boys this and my brother who now have their own sets.

Great Collection Piece..with a few notes

Overall - a very cool collection piece. The blue is absolutely striking. The handle feels really interesting and cool in the hand. Lock worked fine for me. The grip fits a smaller hand like mine but I can see it being an issue for larger hands. The finger hole is well designed, the back catches you just a little on flips but you just have to open your hand a little. Blade is razor sharp, excellent quality. The ball bearing open is very smooth I think. So besides the minor design points I think this holds true to the Hibben quality. Actually - cool trick I just found. The guard that allows the blade to be full with actually allows you to pop the blade and flip it open as well. So versatile in many ways as well
