In the series, this sword was made by blademaster Tam al'Thor and later passed down to Rand. Tam became a blademaster while serving in the army of Illian and crafted this one of a kind sword. The sword offers a black scabbard with a bronzed heron attached. The sword itself features a slightly curved katana blade that is sharp on only one side. The handle, or tsuka, of this sword features a unique basket weaved leather grip and a brass tsuba with a bronzed heron attached to the blade.
