The ad said it was used extensively by the Army and the Air Force this is true the use it but so do Navy and USMC air Crews and everyone loves these!! I have one and it is an AWESOME Knife, meant to be used.
I have many quality knives, and use them all for different purposes. But I was not satisfied with what I had for EDC and general purpose use on a daily basis...until this Ontario USAF Survival Knife arrived today. It is strong, has a good heft to it, looks rugged, and solid, and best of all, it is a perfect size for carrying on a belt. Slightly smaller than a standard KaBar, and equal in size to the KaBar 3/4 (a knife I also like) but with a much stronger build, thicker steel, and feel to it. I am very pleased with this knife, and it looks like it will take a beating and still be ready for more. The sheath is well made, and has a metal reinforced end piece, something I was not expecting to see, but quite happy with it. Looks like I can take most of my other knives and place them in my safe, relegating them to collector's eye-candy, while I hit the trails with this Ontario USAF Survival knife. Will be purchasing another.
Very well made. Not some cheap knock off. Can be used to dig holes and pound stakes into the ground with the butt end. Comes razor sharp and can easily be returned that way after the toughest use like digging. Every bit the quality of the Kbar knife my dad was issued flying in the Navy in WWII.
the perfect knife for me !
Definitely 5 stars for this knife. My dad managed to get one for free while he was in the Navy. They had extras and handed them out. If you sharpen the blade, though, you will lose the finish where you rub the stone against the metal. Doesn't look bad two-tone, though. Be careful with the sharpening stone. It's pretty thin so it will break if you drop it(like I did). Overall, a great knife, fun to own, it'll last you forever!
Sharp out of the box with a excellent, solid leather sheath. The overall length is not too long to strap it to your hiking gear. The handle is comfortable leather. A tough, sturdy survival knife.
I just got my knife a couple weeks ago and WOW this knife is beautiful very well crafted, strong, and study. I've put it under 15 stress test and this knife still holds true! I was worried when I first got it because it felt dull and would not fit the sheath right, but 10 strokes on the stone it came with and I could actually shave with it, yes I did try it, also I've worked with the sheath and its like a glove now amazing. All in all an amazing buy definitely worth the money I'll be buying another one soon!
Ranger (review below) said it straight and this is probably the best all around survival knife that you can buy for the money. Mine is an AF issue Ontario dated 2-80 and I have had it that long. The leather handle with grooves is worn down some with use but is still comfortable to grip tight. The top serrations are for sawing through an aluminum aircraft fuselage and the butt cap for cracking nuts open. Two holes are drilled through the guard that can be used for spear applications. After 25 years of use my blade was beginning to feel loose and I simply placed the blade in a vice and ballpeened the butt cap tight again and that fixed it like new again. This knife is tough as nails and will hold a good edge and a sharpening stone comes with it on the sheath. The sheath is top quality and constructed so tough that it will never need replaced. A good sheath is so important especially in a survival situation. The blade has wide blood-groves on both sides. The AF got it right with this knife which is so superior to the Curtis Le May SAC approved knife back in the 1940's and early 50's. The tragedy is when I die I can't take this knife with me. It will be with me until then, guaranteed. When you get yours you will not want to stop holding it, trust me, you'll see.
Keeping it simple, the finest usable knife known to mankind. I own 4 originals and 2 Ontario current issues that are fantastic. Got one in my "go" kit in case of emergencies.
It's a genuine military issue knife from Ontario. Probably a Desert Storm contract overrun as mine is dated 1991. Being a late issue knife, the butt is peened and not screwed on. It's a high quality knife at a very low price.
