Product Description
This compact orienteering compass is the perfect pocket companion for hikers and hunters. It features a sighting mirror with a vertical line for exact bearing taking and a turnable housing with orienteering lines for accurate calculations. A millimeter ruler will assist in measuring and map reading while a nylon lanyard is sure to keep this durable compass close at hand. 2 1/4 inch x 1 1/2 inch.
Bought these for my nephews to play around with. They both work great for only paying $1.50 each.

It's Two Dollars
First off, do NOT purchase this compass as a primary means of survival. Not for camping/hiking/backpacking and don't plan on relying on it if the SHTF. Let me iterate that this compass costs $2. I figured, for that price, I had nothing to lose adding it to my order. I received the compass and attempted to check it's accuracy and found that the needle didn't spin. At all. If I took the compass flat in my hand and shook it I could get it to move a quarter turn but it showed absolutely no signs whatsoever of pointing toward a pole or even really spinning on its own axis. It's not that it was inaccurate, it wasn't even moving. As a last ditch effort, I grabbed a strong, rare earth magnet that I knew would reach the needle through the plastic case and tried to magnetize the needle. To my surprise, I not only succeeded but also found that the newly magnetized needle was pointing pretty close to North and was finally turning on its own as I spun the compass in my hand. I compared it to another compass and found it to be within a couple degrees. Either the needle was never properly magnetized or it lost its magnetization in handling/shipping. The problem is that it's most likely the latter and if has already demagnetized once, it will easily do so again. Magnetized metals lose their polarity by being hit. What that means is every time you drop this, jostle it around in your backpack, your kid throws it against the wall, etc. it loses some of it's magnetization. Eventually, you no longer have an accurate reading or, as it would appear in my case, you have a completely dead needle. It gets 3 stars because it does seem to work and has other minor added features, but it has absolutely no durability. I hope this is common sense given that this costs $2 but, please buy a better compass if you intend to put your life in its hands.
