Product Description
The discovery of the amazing strength and durability of White Wax Wood has just recently become well publicized. These Chinese saplings have offered shock absorbent, unbreakable power for thousands of years, and now you can experience it for yourself! Ideal for use as a spear shaft, or it can be cut down to suit your needs. Walking cane, hiking staff or training device - the possibilities are practically endless! Each staff is crafted using the tree's natural dimensions, so each staff will vary slightly in diameter.

This is a nice overall staff. It is very light. The width is not uniform down the entire length, but nor should it be. Very strong and flexible.

I just received this piece today and must say I am impressed. The wood is heavy and strong. I personally craft walking sticks and other such items out of wood and can easily say the wood is very good. Definitely tapered towards one end, which I came to expect from the reviews, but both ends withstand strikes. I have read some of the reviews and as a martial artist I think such a fine piece of wood would be wasted on a walking stick or anything of the sort. The only issue I have is it will have to lose about six inches off the top where the wood split upon drying out, which happens frequently when making walking sticks, wizard/Druid staffs or magic wands, so it’s no big deal at all!

I ordered two of them. I know they say they're almost unbreakable and from what I've noticed they are tough and flexable depending on it's thickness. One is fairly thick compared to the other. But they're both pretty tough. What I'm having a hard time believing is they are natural wood and you have ton of variables with a natural wood product. We have to expect possible weak spots and expect it to possibly chip when it's smacked against other hard objects. I haven't had any issues but I also haven't tried to knock over a tree with it yet. It's tough, flexible and really straight for a natural tree. I recommend them very highly but they are wood and they aren't indestructible. I'm going to carve on mine. Im not an expert at carving but I will have something very cool when I get done and I will enjoy these alot.

All these complaints about this not a proper bo (a Japanese-style staff) are complete hogwash! This is a gun (a Chinese-style staff which is used in Shaolin Kung-Fu). The main difference being that a bo has either no taper, or has a double taper (thick in the center and thinner at the ends). Traditionally, the gun would have a single taper which is presented here (in the southern style of staff, or Nan Gun). I did not order this staff, myself, but rather received it as a birthday gift from my Sifu. It is a beautifully-simple and strong staff, and there is only one knot on mine at the very base, which should not affect performance at all. I was able to cut it down a few inches to match my height (5'10") with little to no effort, and the staff moves wonderfully while performing my taolu (the kung fu equivalent of a kata in karate). Overall, a great value.

Exactly how a waxwood staff should be not supposed to be a bo staff the thinner side is capable of being used with a spear head if you purchase one separately. Great quality durable and great for heavy practice

Great staff. Very light, despite it's 6ft length. Noticeable but not intimating to good people. Thugs tend to give pause & look for easier targets. Extremely reasonable price & very prompt delivery. Recommend highly.

Half inch at one end tapers down to 3/4 inch on the other end on a 6 foot staff is laughable. No quality control ? Some small bends in the wood to be expected, but the taper is huge, not usable as a Bo staff without MAJOR woodworking.

This is a rather nice piece of wood - straight grain, no knots, smooth. At a full six foot it is bit long for hiking in the woods so it will either get trimmed a bit or steamed and bent into a crook. All in all a splendid staff.

Great staff, just don't expect a perfectly straight one. But that adds to its uniqueness. All in all a great buy and it will do what its intended for reguardless.

I've only had my staff for a couple of weeks, and I must say I simply love it. Its strong, durable, hard hitting. When my buddy first saw it he fell in love with it. This staff is great and the price is so awesome. Thanks budk for a great price and even greater product. My purchases from budk don't end here.

This is the best staff that I have bought. It can take a beating even from the most stressful martial arts training. Able to block anything from another staff to a sword. Way to go budk! :)

For people who are complaining about the flexibility of this weapon, don't know about weapons at all. Wax wood staffs are used for their shock absorbency which gives them a whipping like advantage, like a hard whip. So the flexibility is doing its JOB that's the point of a wax wood staff. Thanks BUDK for making a historically accurate bo staff.

This staff is awesome. It is tapered, and very slightly bowed, which seem completely intentional. But the best is its light weight, and this wood is very tough. The staff will bend slightly, but I'm quite sure I couldn't break it if I tried.

I have yet to purchase this item but my friend has the exact one. mine will be here shortly. I would like to remind everyone who has bought and will buy this item. That it IS WAX WOOD, just like ritan and bamboo it IS meant to have a bend to it, it is a BOW STAFF not a regular staff. for a hard non bending staff i suggest the ninja staff BUDK also offers. This is the type of staff you'd see in asian martial arts movies. very good very durable, excellent for martial arts. Personally i think it's disrespectful to use such an object for hiking, that's what walking and hiking sticks are for but that IS my personal opinion. enjoy. Editor's Note: Thank you for your comments. We have updated the review to reflect the appropriate spelling.

The wax wood feels really good to handle and the staff seems sturdy. having not read the other reviews beforehand I was a bit surprised at the difference in size, but I now realize that this was apparently intentional and it doesn't really take away from the staff in any way. You aren't throwing it so balance isn't going to effect you all that much. I say 5/5

mine came sanded to my liking already. it slides through your hands but if you want it to stop, it stops. the control from the texture is unable to be compared with anything else. as stated before, one side is larger than the other. this is a good thing though because it lets you keep track of which end is which better. it does not throw off the balance though enough to affect anybody who knows what their doing.

a very nice staff very sturdy strong and durable. the other reviews are right it is smaller on one end and slightly crooked but still a very good buy. only problem is it took a week to get here. =( but still a good buy

superb balance. perfect taper. just enough flex. incredibly strong and durable. relatively lighter than expected. you can really whip this thing. very smooth. just feels great in the hands. everybody should have one regardless of age gender race religion or economic status. never know when youre gonna need a really good stick

First of all lets start with some dimensions they need to put in. The wider end or the staff is one inch diameter, and the smaller is a little over 3/4 of an inch in diameter. its light sturdy.

Now what i did with mine is i ordered about 8 feet of carbon fiber sleeve (one inch diameter) and used some screws and washers and now the staff is reenforced to bad ass status.

over all good staff, just try to keep them away from your room mate

Ok no it's not white, but off white or light yellow. Big woop! The staff is heavy, almost but packs a punch. It dented a 4x4 I use as a cutting stand, with no damage to it's self! Mine is mostly straight and is realy close to the same diameter at both ends. If your looking for a staff that can take a beating and still look good, this is it.

This staff is awesome. It's exactly what I wanted. After seeing this staff on Deadliest Warrior I had to have one. Now I do and I love it. Mine came so well sanded it was soft to the touch, and both ends were the same diameter. This is much better than I was expecting.

Very nice buy. I really love how it's six feet long, and it really is one solid piece. I bent it pretty far and it stayed together. Deffinitely worth the money.

awesome. light, durable, and very fun to use. the only thing that i could say against it is that one end was only very slightly wider than the other, but it was hardly noticeable, and definitely not enough to change my mind about how great this product is

I came to the Bud K site tonight PURPOSELY to buy two WAX WOOD STAFFS. I haven't yet made my purchase, as out of habit, I've "stopped to read" - read the reviews. Something I always do and is USUALLY NEVER NECESSARY WITH BUD K PRODUCTS! But as I said. It's habit, and I'm glad I did this time. I am SO PLEASED Mr. Jason Armbruster, (Appleton, WI) wrote such a wonderful review! A WAX WOOD STAFF IS NOT a walking stick, although many martial artisits who CHOSE the staff used it as a walking stick of sorts (more a disguise of the staff's true purpose). And his further exact comments. As a martial artist since 1970 (Tang Su Do and Shoto Kahn)the weapons ARE NOT toys nor are they, "poorly made" walkin' sticks. Wax wood staffs are NOT meant to be CHOPPED into eschrema sticks (which can be purchased or built cheaply), nor turned into spear shafts. Spears actually used a different wood(s) altogether.

rumors about this item is true, one end will infact be much wider than the other one... but its also true that is it very strong and shock absorbent...

its true that this item seriously needs sanding, spinters are kinda easy to get when weilding this weapon... but i dont think thats the problem, if you seriously dont like the feel of this wood, you should sand it yourself-(not to be an ass)... everyone's feel for a weapon is different, you should sand it to where you feel good weilding it...

even inspite of the small amount of work required to make this stick into a weapon for the hands of its users, it is true i will give this item 5/5 stars =D

p.s. the wood is not going to be white like in the picture, its going to be a darker shade of yellow

Did some drilling of parries to test durability. they seem to hold up well. One did come warped- just a little curved. They also seem to have a natural taper to them, which is fine by me but wasn't expected.

I don't mean to be a complainer but i thought it would be straighter and thicker i don't know what happened but it looks like something i could find and carve in the forest with any average wood. I may just be untrained in how they look since this is my first boa staff but i thought it was worth complaining about.

its good. very cool. but IT WAS NOT PERFECTLY STRAIGHT_ for all those who want to buy it. it may not be perfect with no curve. but it is 6ft. and it is wax wood.

I read the description, and I understand that your average stick will be thicker at one end that the other, but the staff I received starts out fairly thick at one end, but quickly tapers down, and at the far end is just over 1/2 an inch thick. I bought this to add to a spear tip, but it is not suited for this at all. I gave it 2 stars because I can see that if it had been uniform in thickness, (Like the one in the photo/video I might add!!!?!?!) it would be perfect. I call this a classic bait and switch. I know not all of them will be identical, but you should not pass off sub-standard merchandise on the unlucky few to save a buck. You should have some type of quality control in place.

This staff is ok, but it's like a pool stick. It's really fat on one end and its about as thick a whiffle ball bat. Overall it's not good for REAL Martial arts.

When I ordered it was buy one get one free. After waiting over six months because they were on backorder, I finally got only one staff. I had ordered before and got exactly what I wanted, however this time, not only didn't I get the free staff, I only received one and it was the correct size on one end but tapered down to half the diameter on the other. This shipment was definitely a major disappointment.
