Product Description
This top-quality Masahiro Samurai Sword measures in at a whopping 41 inches from end to end, featuring a 28" hand-forged 1060 carbon steel blade with a sharp edge and a unique, anodized copper finish. A heavy blood groove adds authenticity to this stunning blade with 10-fold layers. It has the look and feel of a rich copper-tone Damascus blade. The handle features genuine ray skin and a decorative cord wrap and cast metal alloy embellishments including a custom-designed habaki, tsuba, menuki and pommel. A hand-lacquered scabbard houses the blade.
Well this sword definitely exceeded all expectations I set up for it! The blade is an amazing color, the edge is almost razor sharp, and it's wrapping is near flawless. I'm not sure why other reviewers are having an issue with the pegs though, I'm able to disassemble the blade effortlessly. All in all, definitely a purchase I recommend!

this is a very beautiful sword and i have no complaints, aside from CHINA written on part of the blade like other people have stated, and the stand that came in the box is very poor quality. the box itself is very nice, but one of the 2 clasps is missing but that fine.

I bought this as a gift for a friend, he was amazed just by the look of it, but after he drew it, his jaw hit the floor! Its a very well made piece for the $100 range. The leather wrapping is well done, and tsuba is solid, and the blade is thick, strong, and sharp. Not to mention they throw in the box, bag, and stand as well! The blade is indeed red, but changes from brick red to sunshine gold depending on what kind of light is hitting it. Hold it out in the first sunlight at dawn and you will see something beautiful.

Received this sword in the mail yesterday. The blade is a bit darker than pictured but still looks outstanding. Overall construction is very well done. The word "china" is noticable but does not detract from the overall look. Very nice looking product.

This is an amazing buy, my first Masahiro, definitely not my last. I was amazed at how well presented this sword was, The beautiful red box with a vivid yellow silk interior.
The blade is beautiful, the red color is kind of a brick red, but it is radiant. It is also very sharp, and sturdy. Some cutting out back proved it, I cut some bamboo rods and some milk jugs filled with water, not a chip or any issue at all.
The tsuka (hilt) is just awesome, with a white ray skin and the jet black leather wrap.
The tsuba (guard) is also great, and goes well with the whole sword.
The Saya (Scabbard) is unassuming and nothing special, and I don't know if it's like this with every sword, but it was too tight, the sword goes in just fine, but is extremely hard to get back out.
The person under me said something about a silver 'China' on the blade, well it took me a few seconds to find it, it doesn't stick out at all, in fact you have to look close to even see it, maybe a half inch wide by about an inch long.
Over all I'd recommend this sword to everybody with money to spend.

I ordered this right before new year's. An all around great sword. The coating on the blade look more cooper than the blood red color I was expecting, but still very cool. Probably isn't going to be my first choice of blades to use, but that is mostly because I want to save the blade color.
Although I have to pick apart a few of other people's reviews. To those complaining about the color being permanent, it is much like the paint on a car. The paint is charged to stick to the metal of the car. The paint doesn't simply fall of a car, and it doesn't here either. However, if you grind away the steel, then you are exposing steel that hasn't been treated with the coating.
And the people complaining abut "crooked" pegs, just calm down. Most swords have angled pegs. This gives the sword a stronger structure. I've never owned or seen a sword with pegs that are perpendicular to the hilt. I have no trouble removing the pegs, although I still haven't been able to remove the blade, but it isn't because of the pegs being stuck.

when i got this katana i was very pleased. the handle was perfectly on the handle and it was the sturdiest katana i have ever bought. the only thing wrong was when you shine it in the light you can see rust and when you dont shine it in the light the rust looks blackish but i think it was a good katana for the price

First, the pros: high-grade leather wrapping, very nice presentation with the box, sharp blade, all the fittings are tight and secure, and the balance of the katana is very good (not overly top-heavy or handle-heavy like cheaper katanas; balance point is a few inches above the tsuba, right where it should be). The cons: blade is reddish-brown, not quite the lighter red color pictured, CHINA is in a contrasting color (regular steel color) and is plainly visible on the sword(!) If the CHINA wasn't so prominent, or if it were placed somewhere less conspicuous, it would get five stars, but it detracts from an otherwise beautiful and nicely-crafted katana.

Pretty till you look closer
Since I am the first reviwer. AND I am NO sword expert nor claimn to be. I had high hope this sword would be the red gem in my collectio. However, I have to leave it in the scarrab because of several nic's on the edge and scraps on the sides of the blade. The scarrab and the wrapping are AWESOME but the most important part (the blade) is the worst part. Maybe this is the only one that is like this, but i got it. Now, I have bought many items from Budk and have been happy with most of those items, and probably will continue to buy from Budk, but when it comes to show pieces i will spend the extra $50-100 on a web site that sell's real show pieces. The old saying You get what you paid for comes to mind. The sword seems like it might do work more than show. the copper color comes right off with simple cuts (card board). OH well, I will keep looking.

Mantel piece if you want to keep the finish
"Masahiro" It clearly says ten ryu on the tag attached to the hilt and the box.
"this finish is forever fixed to the blade" more like copper rustoleum. My blade was un-oiled and one gentle swipe of paper towel rubbed off the copper coating. switched to toilet paper to oil it. Still dragged enough reddish black stuff to reveal that the coating is just a cut away from disappearing.
However, swift and good package arrival and protection and the inscription was correct.
