P80 Lower Receiver Not For The Amateur
I had never tried milling before and the video makes it look easy. I bought the wrong drill press to start with...it was a 10" WEN bench mount press. Once I added an X-Y vise the vertical working space was greatly reduced.. After installing it into the chuck the milling bit hung about 1" lower than the top of the jig. I tried to outsmart it by inverting the press table and I gained 1.5", but no matter how I tried to shim it using a torpedo level the X-Y vise would not level in both directions on the uneven surface. I then resorted to adjusting the jig by raising it about 1/8" in the rear as near as to true bubble as I could get it and then tightened the vise very hard. I started milling and it went well, but raising the jig in the vise didn't work out and I broke through the floor of the fire control group pocket. What part I did get done looked really good with smooth sides and smooth at the bottom of the pocket...until I broke through. I got discouraged at that point and rather than buy another drill press I purchased a pre-milled lower at the local gun shop. However, I do firmly believe that if I had the correct height drill press I could have accomplished the task and milled the pocket properly. The milling part was not as hard as I first thought so my difficulty was in my initial setup not being attainable with the press I bought...I wish I still had my old Sears floor mount press and it would not have been a problem. So, my suggestion for the first timer is make sure you have the correct equipment with plenty of height adjustment to compensate for the vise.

Take your time!
If you have cast iron cajones and nerves of steel, use a drill press with fixtures... AND TAKE YOUR TIME! Man I miss my mill.. Finished out well, and FYI, It will accept a binary trigger pack....As for BudK, there is no faster delivery!
