Smith & Wesson Survival Knife Spear Attachment

My new possum poker! Lol! I bought this to give a little pay back to the possums that run along the back side of my backyard wall behind the lattice work. They torment my dog and disturb my sleep. Pay backs coming you oversized rats. Lol! The S&W 8 seems solidly made and easily converts from knife to spear. Although it has a false edge it came shaving sharp and the tip is super pointy, I've thrown it into several trees with no issues. For $5 bucks more at a hardware store it screws easily onto a 60"inch painters pole making it a slim and formidable spear for small jobs and game! Comes in a nice thick box, the sheath is a loose fit but, has a plastic insert inside to insure you don't tear up the sheath when removing or replacing the blade inside. Can't wait to use it.!

The 3 day shipping took 5 days but the knife itself is great - went to home depot and bought a new heavy duty broom handle for 5 bucks and screwed it right on the threads. .i am very happy with it (impressed even).

I took mine into the garage and a few minutes on the bench grinder and I had two cutting edges up to the curve (all that is needed for a spear). Do not hurry and over heat it. I frequently dip it into a can of water to save the temper and anneal. It will be a little weaker at the tip.

I'm not an experienced spear thrower by any means, however, from a range of roughly 10 feet using a cheap broom handle I managed to sink every throw into a make shift target. The only problem being that on my last throw, with the blade about half way in my target, the broom handle screw broke. I would NOT recommend using anything but wood. Just a heads up, enjoy everybody.

Rifle ammunition is getting scarce, and supplies will probably continue to be hoarded. I admit to not always dispatching game with one shot. The Smith & Wesson Survival Spear is the answer, providing the means for a quick dispatch of a critically wounded deer, bear,or Russian boar.Sharpening the "false edge" should be viewed as an easily-accomplished option. Those who use it primarily as a working knife will find more safety around the camp, leaving the dull edge.On the other hand, I have used a single-edge knife, lashed to a hickory limb,in an actual survival situation -- this knife/spearhead is superior to that right out of the box.

They are a good product,well thoughtout design and I will buy more.Is a great point for a longer walkingstick,not to mention several on a long handle keeps the predators (two or four legged) at bay.I would rather have one on a long pole in an emergency than wish I had one. The possibilities are endless.

This is a nicely made, heavy duty tool made by a company with bona fide history. I have not yet used this tool on anybody important so I really cannot say for sure how well it works. But it has potential and looks like it can do the job. LOL.

I think it will be a great Item to add to my bug out bag. As a last resort to defend yourself or stealth hunting. A long or short pole can be used ( prefer a longer pole ) I would have liked to see the handle part that you unscrew hollow for survival Items Matches fish hooks, Etc. With Improvement's I would give it a 5 star rating !

Smith & Wesson are obviously famous for their firearms but I suspect that this spearhead would penetrate plenty well enough to provide an alternative to a gun. As a knife, it is of S&W quality with just one sharp cutting edge and a wicked point in a sturdy housing. The handle disassembles easily for shaft attachment, but is 'grippy' enough to enable this to function perfectly well as a stand alone knife. Well worth its comparatively reasonable price.

The "Beef" seems to be the false edge. Okay the picture is obviously wrong, but the bottom line is that this is a great outdoor/survival knife well worth the price. I don't expect to have to turn this into a spear and fight off Zombie hords any time soon, but with this I could. More of them will also be going out to friends and family for Christmas, but don't let them know.

This is an excellent idea but not what I would have expected from S&W. I know that I have fashioned a spear out of a survival knife fastened to the end of a stick on a few occasions, this makes it so much simpler. I agree that making it double-edged would have been a great idea but it's is from a company based in Springfield, MA. Double-edged knives are illegal here so I'm guessing that is their reasoning... but honestly who knows. Realisitically... if you can't make this work as is, you either need to spend more time in the gym or maybe take up quilting or basket weaving.

This interesting knife has one serious flaw, it is only sharp on one side. This makes penetration of any target twice as difficult. It also has one surprise, it has the standard threading for mop and broom handles so you can make a quickie shaft from any mop, broom or pavement brush with a removable handle. Handles can also be purchased at supermarket.

This is not a double-edged blade as shown. One side is not sharpened at all. The invoice/packing slip even describes it as a "false edge." Strange, in my opinion. Sure, I can sharpen it, but when I saw it, I figured a worker in China must have taken a lunch break and forgot to finish it.
