What's Kukri Knife?

What's Kukri Knife?

By Adelia Ladson

A Kukri Knife Is...

Acting as both a knife and an axe, the machete is one of the most versatile fixed blades that you can own. They come in a variety of styles and the kukri is a Nepalese machete originally used to clear wooded areas. It was later used as an effective weapons due to its curved design. The shape varies from being acute straight to highly curved with angled or smooth spines. The kukri can be used to cut, chop, slash or smash just about anything. Whether you're braving your backyard or the wild, a kukri knife is a must-have tool.

Popular Kukri Knives

Depending on what you need a kukri knife for, choose the style that will work for you. I have included a few different models of kukris from traditional to tactical.

Timber Wolf Nepal Kukri

The Timber Wolf Nepal Kukri is just like the traditional and classic fixed blade that might be found in use in the Kathmandu Valley as a primary cutting tool. The knife has an acutely sharp, 10” stainless steel blade with the traditional curved profile and it features a unique, double-notched finger choil for extra finger security. The handle scales are a natural-colored wood that are ergonomically finger-grooved so that you always have a secure grip in any situation.

Combat Kukri 1918 Trench Knife

The Combat Kukri 1918 Trench Knife takes the classic kukri blade and marries it with the classic trench knife knuckleduster handle to create a new battle-ready knife. The blade is 1095 carbon steel, featuring a blood groove, and the knuckle guard handle is solid brass with an antique finish and "U.S. 1918" deep stamped into it. The 16" overall kukri can be carried in its heavy-duty leather sheath.

USMC Desert Sand Kukri

Officially licensed by the United States Marine Corps, the USMC Desert Sand Kukri is built for action in the field, whether at home or on foreign shores. Just like the Marines, it's ready to conquer and cleave the way through any obstacle. The kukri is a rugged model with a stonewashed, 3Cr13 stainless steel blade and a grippy G10 handle that gives you a secure hold in any weather. As on the blade, "USMC" is in white on the durable black, nylon sheath.

Genuine Gurkha Kukri

The Genuine Gurkha Kukri is another traditional model of this type of machete. It was inspired by the legendary Gurkha warriors who fought battles with the fixed blade leading the way. Its hand-forged, high carbon steel blade is approximately 1/4" thick and the handle is carved from brawny hardwood. Adhering to the tradition of the Gurkhas, a small utility knife, the "Karda" used for fine cutting tasks, and a "Chakmak" used for sharpening is included with the kukri. A premium leather sheath houses both the two, 4" fixed blades and the kukri.

KA-BAR Kukri

With over 120 years of experience under its belt, KA-BAR is more than a tried and true company, it's an American icon. So, you can rest assured that when they put out their KA-BAR Kukri, it was going to be one of the top contenders on the market. The kukri is well-suited for discreet, undercover work or missions, since it's all black from point to pommel. It has an 11 1/2", carbon steel blade and a stacked-style Kraton G handle with a lanyard hole. What I really like about a KA-BAR is that the knife is always put through extensive field testing before it's put on the market.

M48 Cardinal Sin Tactical Kukri

The M48 Cardinal Sin Tactical Kukri has an ultra-modern tactical look and feel with its eye-catching metallic red accents. M48 has a distinct knack for developing bold, modern weapons based on classic, time-tested designs. The sharp, curved blade is cast of stainless steel, and it has thru-holes to reduce the weight. The black TPR handle is contoured and textured for a comfortable, secure grip. The M48 Cardinal Sin Tactical Kukri comes with a custom Vortec belt sheath.
