Survival Knives

A survival knife is the most important piece of gear in any outdoorsman's pack. It doesn't need to be a large, heavy knife in order to be important for survival. In order for it to be used in emergency situations, you must have it with you. Therefore, a survival knife is the knife in which you will carry most often. Some survival knives have a hollow handle which is filled with a waterproof survival kit with such necessities as waterproof matches and a compass. Survival experts like Bear Grylls will tell you where matches fail, fire strikers will prevail. A magnesium fire striker, which is included with many of our knives, is capable of producing sparks even after being drenched in water. The most important thing to know when selecting a survival knife is, "If you aren't carrying it; it can't help you survive."

Split A Log With A Knife

Even without a hatchet or large knife, you can split a large log for fire wood with a small survival knife. This technique is called batoning. You hold your knife blade flat against the center of the log and hammer (or baton) the blade into the large log using another piece of wood. The large log should start to crack, eventually splitting in half, producing excellent fire wood.

Find Dry Wood In The Rain

A rain storm could be one of the most life-threatening experiencing in a survival situation. It is especially difficult to start a fire in the rain because of the lack of dry wood. You can find dry tinder by shaving off the outer portions of wet wood with your knife, until you reach the dry inner. Shave as thin of slices as possible for optimal fire tinder.

    I've just returned from a 4 month trek on the Appalachian Trail and I carried the Amazon Jungle Survivor with me the entire trip! I replaced the survival items along the way as I used them up, but this knife is incredible. I used it to split logs for firewood, cut rope, clean fish and a ton of other tasks. I wrapped the sheath in 550-paracord which seemed to hold it together better since it wasn't the highest quality sheath. But, it's still a great survival knife for a ridiculously low price, thanks BUDK!

    I have used this knife for chopping wood, it has a strong blade and it sharpens very well and easy with the included stone. It is also well balanced and can be thrown if needed. I would take this knife camping and trust it not to let me down. It comes with a fire striker, survival instruction manual and a loud whistle which would all come in handy in a survival situation. Good knife for the money.

    I bought the Alaskan Survival Knife from Hibben and it is beautiful. Mine came with a sharp edge already, I only applied minor sharpening to make razor sharp. Sturdy, comfortable grip. Beautiful handle. I have not had a chance to field test yet but from playing with it in my garage it gets my approval for sure. I know this is a bit much but i feel like I could kill a grizzly with this knife. I’m sure I can’t but thats probably my lack of skill and not the knife’s awesomeness.
