A Very Sturdy and Hefty Hatchet

"*pushes glasses up nose* First off, I feel it necessary to address the misnomer of this tool, and that it's technically a hatchet (a small, versatile, and compact chopping tool for camp use on small branches and lighter tasks), not an axe (a long-handled chopping tool designed for powerful swings, felling trees and larger tasks). But I get it. "Axe" sounds cooler than "hatchet. " Anyway, this hatchet feels like it was made to work, and definitely lives up to the "survival" part of its name. Has a surprising amount of weight for its size, and feels much smaller overall than I expected, however it is still absolutely large enough to tackle any task. The head of the hatchet has a wide taper and edge profile suitable for splitting small logs and branches. The handle is comfortable, with the flared end providing a secure grip that will keep it from accidentally flying out of your hand. The leather sheath isn't the most heavy-duty thing and feels like it was made out of rather thin leather or faux leather, which probably wouldn't stand up to years of heavy abuse, but it will suffice for light use. My only complaint is that the hatchet I received has 3 nicks/dents in different places on the blade, almost like it was dropped or banged on something at some point. This likely happened during the assembly process at the manufacturer, as the package it arrived in was completely undamaged. This isn't a major issue, and should be relatively easy to correct with some honing of the edge which I was planning to do anyway. Overall, it's a good tool for the price and should last for years."

Very nice axe/hatchet

"Let me start by saying that this is a very nice axe overall. Construction is excellent. Handle grain is 95% perfect alignment and pinning is spot on and secure. I have no idea what type of steel the head is made of; but the casting is perfect, and the edge grind is even and flawless. It arrived sharp though I may hone it a bit more. If I have a complaint it relates to the slipperiness of the handle. I will rough the wood with sandpaper and apply linseed oil. Grip diameter is great for my hand as I like a larger diameter for security. Choking up to the head is comfortable for shaving wood. I have put the axe to use yet; but I feel it will work fine for normal camping tasks. Although, that is not why I bought it. I collect a lot of edged tools and have multiple axes and hatchets. As for the sheath, I can say that it is adequate and designed well except for the belt loop that is ridiculously small for anything bigger than a 1" dress belt. And while the loop and button snap straps are actually leather, the sheath itself is of a man-made material. It works fine and will hold up barring abuse. Basically, it protects you from the blade. So, while it sounds like I'm being negative, I'm anything but. I'm glad to have this axe/hatchet; and it will do what I purchased it for."
