"I've been looking for a quality Bowie knife for years. Too many are made with a rat tail in the handle, weak bolsters and pommels that fall off. The prices are not bad, but, you can't get quality for $50. I'm used to spending about $200 on a good knife. However, finding a quality steel Bowie with a full tang and wood scales on the sides was hard. When I came upon this Honshu Pioneer knife I was skeptical. I watched every video I could find, and read every review. Then I pulled the trigger and bought one. It doesn't cost any way near $200, but I am very pleased with how it looks; the scabbard is nice enough for my Wild West display. I have hundreds of knives for every kind of work you can think of. From Kukri's to pocket knives to Henckles kitchen set to Victorinox processing knives. This Honshu Pioneer Bowie has that Bowie knife look I was looking for: (scary large blade with clip point) and still be made of some quality carbon steel (1075). The best part was the full tang and reasonably nice dark red wood scales. And, as far as I can tell, it has a decent hardening done to it. The black finish prevents me from wanting to run a file on it. Like I said. I have hundreds of functional knives, but I needed a Big Bad Bowie of good quality to top off my collection. Now I have one."
Honshu Pioneer Bowie vs. Cold Steel 1917 Frontier Bowie
"Okay, for those of you who, like me, were curious to see how the Pioneer Bowie by Honshu, stacked up against Cold Steel's 1917 Frontier Bowie.....you're welcome! I love the 1917 Bowie. I've owned it for a couple of years, so when I saw the Honshu, I wondered how they'd compared since it looks like Cold Steel lost the patent to the design and Honshu just produced a fairly close replica. LOL! I mean, to a person not familiar with the Cold Steel 1917, you could pass off the Honshu Pioneer as the 1917 Bowie....especially at a quick glance. However, it's clear to see the finger choils are different and the handle butts are clearly different, to include a lanyard hole at the end of the Honshu. You can also see the "Honshu" company name and logo printed at the base of the blade just below the spine. The sheaths are comparable, but different as well. Though overall, the Honshu is a beautiful knife. I just received it fairly recently, so I haven't yet tested the performance. (*Same high carbon steel as well, 1085)"
