Corneta Gavilan Natural Patina Blade Machete
This is an American made camp and trail knife that really performs. The carbon steel blade is thicker than similar-looking knives, and is capable of taking a razor edge. I have had this knife for a over a year, and have used it to split firewood, chop branches, make feather sticks, and one time I used it to dig a hole in the ground. It has a solid grip which fills my large hand, and I carry it on my rucksack in the heavy nylon sheath that Ontario sells for it. I have beat this knife up, but the phosphate finish still looks pretty good. I carry a small file with me to touch up the edge when I'm out in the woods. If you are looking for a big camp and trail knife, and you're not made of money, you just found it!
GREAT WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!! but has a weak handle.
This is not a thin blade machete; it's a very stiff large blade which excels at batoning, planing and chopping. I have built shelters consisting of 2" spruce saplings with this knife, and I've chopped wood up to 4" in diameter in a matter of minutes. I would bring it into the back country as my main blade, wherever bushcraft is done.
I picked one of these up when I was in the military, and I've loved it ever since. It's the perfect size to keep stowed next to me on the seat of my canoe, where I can use it to chop off overhanging brush, vines and weeds. Fits on your belt without catching on everything, and won't scare the pants off other hikers/boaters.
