The closest you’ll get to a switchblade without breaking the law, the Schrade OTF Assisted Opening Pocket Knife fires its razor sharp spear point blade out the front at lightning speed. It’s an impressive, dramatic spectacle that gives you the quickest possible one-handed access to your blade when you need it most - self defense, cutting fishing line from an overstressed rod harness, severing parachute cord and countless other emergencies. If you’re trapped in a wrecked car or burning building, use the integrated glass breaker to save yourself and others. Its lightweight yet tough construction and ease of carry - especially with the built-in pocket clip - make the Schrade OTF a perfect “go-to” pocket knife - suited for most day to day cutting jobs. Like a switchblade, the Schrade OTF’s 3” titanium coated 4116 stainless steel blade ejects straight out of the knife handle using a trigger and spring mechanism. But it does so at a less-than-deadly force, distinguishing it from its illegal counterparts. As a further precaution, the Schrade OTF includes a safety switch to prevent accidental discharge, so you can enjoy peace of mind no matter where you take it or how you carry it - pants pocket, belt or even hung from a lanyard. The durable, slip resistant Zytel handle thwarts cutting blunders and unintentional injuries. Best of all, using the Schrade OTF is just plain fun. Try it once, and you'll be hooked!
This knife is Great! It's exactly what the description says it is. When safety is off and I hit the button, kawhack!! It's instant! I love this knife! I carry it every day along with My gun. Great knife, fair price. It's worth every cent. Sharpens easy, to a razor sharpness.
This is a great knife!! I'm getting one for a friend. I have no issues with resharpening this knife. It sharpens quickly, without much work. That's a MAJOR plus! It comes very sharp. You won't need to sharpen it. I Love the safety on it, it's just not going to open it close on you when the safety is on. I've gotten compliments on it too. It is really light too. That doesn't mean it's not tough. It's plenty tough. Not so tough though if you ran it over. Might be, I haven't tried and don't suggest trying it. I like Schrade products.... It's a good utility knife. Cuts through boxes, and plastics very easily. I have plenty of knives and real good knives. But I use my SCHRADE EXTREME FIRST GENERATION OTF ASSISTED OPENING POCKET KNIFE... I'm getting my Friend one, and most likely will be buying more, as long as they're around. It's a great knife like I said, so I'm sure it's going to be around for quite some time. If you have small hands, you may not be able to put the blade back with one hand. I don't have any issues with that, I use one hand. I have read people saying they had issues with closing the blade with one hand. Even so, that shouldn't really prevent anyone from getting this blade... Also, I'm not much on writing reviews, but when I really like something, I'm going to take the time to write one.
Overall very pleased with this knife the right size legally to carry and fits well in my pocket. Opens in a flash when needed! Good buy.
well made, lightweight, requires some coordination to use properly, nice Schrade product.
The features that I like with this knife are the blade length, the overall length, the belt clip and the handle. The blade length is a perfect 3" length. So, it does not go past the palms of most people's hands and are a legal carry length in most states. The overall length makes it fit comfortably in your pants when using the belt belt clip. The knife does not overcrowd the space in one's pant pocket and does not cause any interference when bending or sitting. The knife is razor sharp and quickly slices cardboard boxes, plastic bubble wrapped mailer bags, paper bags, rope..you get the picture. Another feature that is different fron other knives I'd like to carry, but don't, is that the knife is very lightweight. You don't even realize that you have it in your pocket. The handle is very light and easy to grip. I have read some reviews where people complained about how one has to grip the knife in such a way where the thumb can push the blade out and the same thumb retracts the blade back. Honestly, I like that feature. I feel that it is safer than other OTF knives and the extraction of the blade seems faster. Probably because the entire thumb has to push the mechanism so the blade travels from the total length of the knife and together with the spring, the knife exits extremely quickly. Faster than my other Schrade tactical OTF. If you are looking for something inexpensive to carry and have when you need it , I recommend this one. I liked it so much that I bought another one.
You get a really great knife for a good price. This is a great everyday carry knife. I carry it with me everywhere I go. The knife comes razor sharp and is my go to knife when it comes to anything that requires a knife especially these days with packages arriving daily and weekly. Though, it is not a tough knife since it is so sharp. So, I suggest that you do not use it for anything other than slicing. I nicked the blade a little by using it as a staple remover. But, no problem the blade can be repaired with a stone. But, since BUDK still has this at a great deal, why not just get another one.
This isn't a switchblade. This is an assist. If you read before using you'll know there's 2 locks. Not just one. And there's a notch on the pocket clip. That I use as a grip when I hit the eject switch. I have average size hands. I had no problem open or close. You do have to get used to it. Mess with it a few. But I put 3in 1 oil. On the slide and locks. And works better. I don't do factory sharp. Im fenniky about sharp. My sharp, or no sharp. 5 swipes on my sticks, and now is my sharp.. good blade. And good service from budk..
Okay I would have to say, This is 1 of the best knifes I have ever owned.Easy to operate. I have not so fine finger dexterity do to CMT. I would recommend this name to anyone. With most things you just have to be careful. It is nice and sharp right out of the box.I am very pleased.
Since I continue to buy these knives from budk and hopefully always will since there the only people smart enough to keep selling them. Thank you budk. I’ll write another review for Mr. Shunk. I believe that this knife from the pocket is faster than all other due to the placement of the trigger in the rear of the handle. Now that there are so many double action otf knives out there that are very cool but all have the trigger up front and it makes it pretty obvious your pulling a knife the second you do it. This is the only one that offers concealment within the hand for when your ready. Hit with the glass breaker at the to of the fist and then trigger with thumb blade pointed down. Practice makes perfect. The poor craftsman blames his tools for error. As far as material I have several of these with a worn down blade and they still preform flawlessly unlike my benchmade lnfadel. This is a dangerous knife learn how to use it properly and you will be a dangerous person.
It’s been a long time since I got the all metal 1st gen all metal model and I never stop buying these clip hooks into right side small pocket of jeans for quick draw open it with thumb blade down practice as fast as you can open close with only one hand flipping it up then down with fingers and become a badass. Like me, Doc.
For the money it works very well. Added dry powder lubricating graphite to moving parts which improved the deployment & retraction considerably.
I like this knife. It's light weight, easy to use. Needed fine sharpening but overall good for the money.
Bought it for my wife.Needed to oil it up a little to make the switches easier to work. But after that it works nice and smooth.Used a little gun oil.Wife carries it everywhere.
One for myself one for my girl with engravings. Though from watching a couple YouTube videos, I thought the engravings would be much larger. But still sharp solid knives. I was able to open and close mine with one hand in under a minute. Was also bummed that the rainbow version was not in stock for my girl. Still a good purchase.
I bought this Knife for myself about a month ago. I am very pleased with the sharpness of the blade out of the box. The handle is a plastic material making it light weight and a very easy to carry. Also, adding the engraving tops it off In overall look. Worth every penny.
The Schrade Extreme First Generation OTF Assisted Opening Pocket Knife was a gift to one of my children. He was very pleased with the knife in all ways.
Works as it should and decently sharp wish the forward assist wasnt so close to the end but its not bad once you get uses to it i would buy again
I have had this knife for a couple of months it is a good knife and I can conceal carry it since it aint automatic. Out of the box it was descently sharp it would not open all the way so I put some 3 in 1 oil on it and broke it in and it works fine as long as you don’t get dirt in. I got some sand in it from being in my pocket so I had to take it apart and clean it and I can see why it shoots out as fast as it does
I keep it oily with Machine gun grease, but, it's practical and quite handy. I like how it has the safefty switch and it is slip-resistant. I live in a rough city, travel a lot and now got a handy knife should I ever need it. Great job, BuDK. ---customer for life!!
I don't understand the negative reviews. I agree that the deployment mech is in a weird location, however, within 30 seconds of having it out of the box, I have mastered single hand deployment/retract. Great value for the price.
I originally reviewed this knife back in 2014 and it's been my EDC since then at work. I'm a mechanic and always having to open boxes or slice open plastic bags. I think it is up to the schrade standard of quality. Easy to resharpen, after carrying for a while one handed operation it easy even though some people complain, it's just different. Like I said, I've been carrying it for three years and it's never failed. Just remember to lock the blade before you put it into your pocket. Also, a little oil in the mechanism helps if it starts to get slow and not lock all the way out.
This knife is awesome my wife got it for my birthday and I love it it's lightweight sharp as hell and the action on it is beautiful easy to open easy to close I'll probably buy another one for my son
Ordered this one on a whim. Thoroughly pleased, quick action, sturdy design, and well made.
Great knife... I got mine almost a year ago... Use it every day at work... Nice and light and sturdy for warehouse duty... Once you get the feel, it's east to open and pocket clip works well... I thought I lost mine and was ready to order another but then I found it....
This knife is super! I got one of these in my stocking on christmas morning and I love it! The blade comes out really fast and locks very securely. The blade itself is very sharp (I cut my self with it within the first ten minutes of owning it) and holds an edge very well. I don't always carry it as an EDC because some may mistake it for an automatic knife, so check your local laws before hand.
I bought this with the expectation of it only lasting a few months I have used it every day at work for a little over a year and its still in the same condition as when I bought it. For 20$ I'm shocked and I will only buy from this company now
This is definitely worth the price. Super sharp and fast opening. Going to carry for awhile. I love that it has the glass breaker and pocket clip that is secure.
I think this is a great knife for the price and a good brand name (Schrade). There are a couple of things about it thought that needs consideration. First the mechanism needs to be oiled and then used several times to get the oil to work with the mechanism and then it will work fine. It has a cavity so a q-tip will help keep that clean. Not sure what the guy meant when the said it takes two hands to open............really? Put your index or second finger on the back side where the curl is in the pocket clip and push the lever with your thumb, easy as pie. The other thing to give it more of a solid feel is to tighten the base of the blade, two small allen head type screws and it will give the knife a more solid feel. This is a pocket knife and as such not designed for heavy use like a camping or hunting knife. Try these things and you will do just fine. If it breaks with light to medium use I will send mine back.
For the price, it's a good knife to show off. It might fall apart in extreme situations, but I really like it. I had Mine engraved and it looks awesome. The more expensive ones may last and werk better. But for the price, you can't beat it. Thank you!
I have several, they all work just fine. I do oil things that move, so don't know how they do with no oil!
This was my first purchase from BudK and I am really pleased with the knife. The only down side was that it was that the mechanism was a little gritty feeling out of the box. I worked it a few times and decided a few drops of oil would be in order. I applied a little gun oil to the lock and the slide, worked it a few times and it was 1000% improvement. The gritty feeling was gone and the knife opened and deployed smoothly. The blade is super sharp out of the box. There is virtually no play in the blade when fully deployed and locked into position. Over all, it is a great knife. I will definitely be making additional purchases for myself and members of my family.
Received mine and right out of the box the release trigger sticks and jams up. The blade catches about 2" out and does not "rocket out" like the video shows. When retracting, blades retracts and again gets hung up with about 2" of blade still sticking out the end at which point you have to regrip the knife and apply more pressure to switch
To get blade to retract all the way in. Not that great in my opinion but it is possible I received a bad one. Not pleased at all with it and not pleased at how much I paid for shipping on my entire order and the time it took to get to me. I most likely will not order from BudK again due to shipping and time it takes to receive items.

This is my first purchase and im pretty happy. I plan on making more purchases soon and im excited. Thanks Budk
bought this last year, still working well, sharpens well too. use the safety dont stab anything too hard and all is good. my daily carry
I opened and close the knife with my left hand. I had no problems whatsoever. Great little knife.
I'm left handed and and I was able to open it and close it on the first try. I had no problem whatsoever.
Bought this knife recently. It is my first OTF knife. I have purchased multiple "assisted-open" knives in the past and really like this OTF knife. Yea it's on the cheaper side but that's what makes it a good knife. I've had no problems with the OTF knife as of yet. Really cool knife, perfectly discreet carry. Definitely recommend it!
I really love this little OTF knife! I bought it thinking for $20 it wouldn't be to great..I thought wrong. Lemme say again I live this thing! Some people have given it bad reviews because they broke it trying to do things with it that it's not intended for..well yes it will if your stupid and hack at things with it. That's not what it's made for. It's made for everyday carry for little stuff. Like cutting boxes open, cardboard, rope, etc. It's so sharp I could cut notebook paper clean in half! Works well, lots of fun, and amazing for the price! You've done it again budk! Thank you.
This is by far one of the best knives I have ever owned! I just love the sound that it makes when you open it up, it just makes me smile. It is a very good knife and yes, you do in fact need to read the instructions before attempting to use the knife. The instructions are very clear and the knife is very concealable, very comfortable. The knife comes out of the package pretty sharp, haven't had to sharpen it yet and I just LOVE IT, very tempted to purchase another one!
this is a great knife. it is ambidexterous. its easy 2 use & very safe. i cant believe how sharp it is.. 4 senior citizens its great..i recommend this as a daily carry knife.. i use mine in my partime job daily.
This knife is so cool, my friends are jealous. Simple opening closing system once you figure out the instructions. Lightweight, fits my large hands well, but you may need two hands to close it. Overall its a fine knife to buy and probably a better gift
Its really cool. Its hard to open for the first few times but it gets easier.its just straight up cool
My uncle used to have one of the real (and now illegal) switchblades. I fell in love with it. This is absolutely the next best thing and you don't have to be a criminal. The casing is a plastic polymer but the mechanics and blade are metal giving it a good hand weight. The blade is sharp enough to shave armhair....yeah..I had to try the old hair test. The bottom of the handle has a nice little glass breaker and knife has a belt clip. The action of the OTF blade is pretty smooth. The safety is a must and works great. For the price I am more than satisfied with this knife. Cool looks and a lot of fun .
My wife who is a seller on e bay, buys quite a bit of merchandise. When I assist her in a complete inspection of everything. I found this Schrade was simple to operate and high quality. I have since gotten another type of otf, it's still Schrade. Both knifes are outstanding 5 stars.
This knife is great like the other guys said it takes a little time to get use to the spring mechanism and to get the primary safety but one they are its really easy to use and kinda fun to
i collect knives, very familiar with schrade quality, the only funny thing is when open the little thumb switch locks it opoen but does not act as a safety in the closed position i find that a little backward, lol there is a safety on the top i have a bunch of assisted open and luckily my grandmother is from italy and passed on to me a geniune (spell)italian made stilleto switch blade one of my most prized knives of my collection
The knife is excellent, (with one exception) I have poor flex range in my thumbs. But I still think it's an excellent knife. I gave it to my son and he has no problem with it. For myself I ordered another OTF by Schrade, which is easier for me to use, also an excellent knife. I have and will recommend both to others.
This is a great knife its fast, safe and easy to use. The blade is very fast and has a manual retract. The blade is securely fixed when out with very little blade play. The coating on the blade is durable. To sum this up if you want a legal version of a switch blade this is even though there is no switch it closest you will get.
Took some playing with to break it in as all knives need. but once broken it its fast and brutal. takes some getting used to to retrieve the blade (locking mechanism and thumb length/flexibility issues) but it sets a new standard in one handed opening categories all over.
Came the day the said the packaging was shitty but I don't care I just want the knife, its kinda confusing if you dont read the directions and its alittle hard to open but im sure after a few opens its simple extremely sharp so over all amazimg buy
After extensive research and trying out numerous side opening spring assisted knives in person, I decided to give the Schrade a try since it was relatively cheap. I know Schrade's aren't made in the US anymore, but the quality of this knife is great.

The spring action works exactly like it should, no hiccups. It's relatively easy to close one handed if you have the thumb strength. The lock is easy to activate, harder to disengage, but if your thumb has enough of a nail to act for some leverage (mine hardly does), it comes easy enough; I feel safer with it in my pocket with the harder to open lock and a flimsy no good lock that might release the blade and cut down my leg, that's for sure.

The blade is sharp and the handle feels strong in my hand. The only thing I'm going to have to get used to is keeping it and grabbing it from my right pocket, as I'm to carrying my knives in the left pocket. It'd be nice if Schrade found a way to either make a OTF with the clip on the opposite side or one that you could change the clip side on.

Either way, I highly recommend this knife, both to those who have owned spring assisted knives before and the ones with traditional folders looking for something new. Both of you won't be disappointed I think.
this is by far my favorite. quick delivery, and it was 10$ less than what I seen from other sites. this knife has good action, sharp sturdy blade and just looks cool. a must have for any knife collector.
I cant say one bad thing about this one! The action is smooth and responsive, and the blade was sharp! I put a slightly better edge on it and now it will cut through anything! The titanium blade is really strong too. As strong as steel but about half the weight. If you want a light, sharp knife that can be released quickly in a pinch, this is the one for you!!
This is a decent quality assisted open knife. A bit difficult to operate but should loosen up with use. A nice knife to keep in my car for emergencies.
Very pleased with knife, bought 2 one for myself and for my husband. I use mine as a boot knife. I like the heaviness to the knife, well built. Until you get the feel for opening & closing with one hand operation it works just great and looks nice.
Way too soon to give a review but this knife is awesome but a little too dangerous you're always going to make sure the safety is on so it doesn't go off in your pocket also the blades housing is high end plastic I thought it would be metal. But really those are my two complaints everything else is a plus sharp and compact and decently made even with plastic I may consider it to be my EDC. Better buy it now while its 19$ usually you're gonna be spending 40+ to get one of these babies.
This knife is not like some of the more expensive knifes which are easier to open and close. I found that you have to basically use two hands to open the knife because the lever to open it is so close to the bottom of the knife and must be pushed forward to open it. It would be very difficult to hold onto the knife with the same hand and open it with your thumb. I prefer the spring loaded knifes that have a push down spring loaded action that are located more towards the front of the knife. Also, the casing feels like plastic, and I agree with other comments that I'm not sure how rugged this knife will be. I bought this for my wife to use and she is not going to put a lot of stress on the knife so I don't think that will be a problem. The locking mechanism works and for this price point, the knife is overall a good knife.
Really this knife in my experience is a better show piece that tactical blade. But i still really like the look of it and for the price it think it is a good purchase.
I have bought many knives from this company. With a little knowledge of operations, this knife performs as expected. The safety features are great and no chance of it accidentaily opening up, and stabbing you. Rugged and well worth the price, I would buy more if I need more
After messing with it a bit, it's functional, does what its advertised/promoted to do and it's very inexpensive for an OTF single action knife. It's sharp enough out of the box. I tightened the allen screws on the release mechanism and it helped some. If you're a guy with big/bigger hands, it can be operated open/closed with one hand. The plastic housing was initially disappointing but has grown on me as it seems durable, provides a good grip, and obviously won't rust. With practice and possibly adjustment it will be more than serviceable for anyone. Also it has a safety. Some better quality OTF's don't. (Lightning for example)Good/Basic OTF to have in collection. I will look into the Viper models, also by Schrade, as their design seems improved over this entry level model. Worth the $20. I LOVE BUD K!!! - Where can I get a Bud K T-Shirt or hat???
Originally bought as a gift for my sister who isnt the best with knives, and nearly cuts herself with my assisted open knife that pivots out of the handle, and the knife is a good knife for her because the blade is away from her hand. The blade came sharp right out of the package and the blade releases quickly. However, like many other reviews, i find the release to be too far back and somewhat awkward to be used with only one hand. Was slightly disappointed to find that the pocket clip was plastic. I thought it would at least be metal since it can take some abuse when clipped on to the pocket. My other disappointment in this knife wasn't involving the knife at all, but the delivery. I ordered the knife on the 20th, of December, and didn't receive it until January 6th. Other than that, it is an okay knife.
Bought this as a gift and almost kept it for myself. Fast, sharp, feels good in the hand. only thing is as others mentioned is the awkwardness of opening it. It's all good. Will get one for myself next order. Worth the $20 price if you can get it with free shipping.
Shipped quickly. Solidly built, and decent edge as shipped. As others have stated, this knife is awkward to operate. Safety is well placed and fairly easy to use, but extracting the blade can take two hands, especially with those who have arthritis.
Primary lock on side works well, just remember to unlock it first. The secondary lock on the blade takes a little getting used to and doesn't seem to do anything actually. Operation is a little awkward at first but to see the very sharp blade come shooting out so fast is pretty cool and you get used to handling it after a few times. A good deal for an OTF knife. Maybe the more expensive ones are a little better but for the cost this one is worth the money. Probably too light for the glass breaker tip to be effective.
I bought this as I thought it was a push button opening knife. It is not quite like the switchblade knifes. You have to push up on the mechanism and then the spring is released and the blade pops out. Seems high quality just not what I was looking for. Returned along with other knife I bought.
For the money, I guess it is ok, but the mechanism is a bit dangerous. Reloading it for the OTF feature requires the you press a stiff button while drawing the blade back in. If it slips, the blade is under pressure and shoots out the end. Be very careful to makes sure that it is drawn back and locked in one stroke. Also, the safety button MUST be engaged or it will engage the OTF feature in your pocket very easily.
This knife is very awkward to open and close. The blade did come nice and sharp. The quality is on the average side. Overall I seem to like it. Has not made it into the drawer yet.
Blade is sharp nice size however the body is kind of week plastic and the assisted opener is sitting way to far back on the handle. In a tactical situation it would be hard to deploy without dropping it
The blade was nice and sharp seems to be good quality but the handel material seems to be flemsy plastic not as sturdy as you would think...but other than that nice knife
Good for edc if you work in a cubicle. Would not go to for self defense. Blade on mine is not a tight fit, feels.like it is going to break when used for cutting heavy. Really sharp though.
I wish the video had shown how the blade retracts. Is it also lightening fast closing as it is opening?
This knife looks great and feels great in your hand, but I find that it is a little more awkward to open than other spring assist blades.

If only the button to extend the blade was not so far from where your natural thumb position is. I almost need two hands to open her up quickly.
When I ordered this knife I thought it would be Easter to use it is to hard to push the buttons with my arthritis hands.
It is awkward and time consuming to get the blade out for use....too many safeties and buttons to push. It also doesn't lock into place, you have to pull it a little to get it to lock. With a little use I am hoping it will fully extend and lock on its own.
Had one of these for a good little while. Fun to play with the OTF spring assisted opening mechanism. That is, until it breaks. Mine broke and the blade launches on it's own at nearly random, making it entirely unsuitable for EDC, and nearly unsuitable as a knife.
I need a knife for professional use. I did not like the way that when the blade is deployed you are left holding onto the very rear end of the handle which requires you to have to totally change your grip on the knife to have control over it. I would have returned it but I took it to work and sold it for what I paid for it.
This would maybe make a good pocket or garage knife. Maybe with practice I can get it to work quickly but the activator switch is at the bottom making it difficult. The blade doesn't cut the hairs on my arm. I've bought better knives for way cheaper. I think these are made just to sell.
I bought this knive in a Wensday and it got here on a Friday, great shipping. The first thing I noticed when I opened the knife was the cheap, light feeling handle! It almost felt like a toy! When I opened the knife it was hard comfortablyreach the opener. I am really impressed with the speed that the blade shot out at! There is litte(but some) blade wobble. It was almost hard to close the blade. Sometimes the blade gets stuck Almost closed! For the price of $20 plus $7 shipping it is not worth it.
The locking button does not work with my finger. Have to use something to open and lock the knife. Makes it worthless. Even tried to use WD-40 but no luck. The blade opening worked good.
I will not even comment on the materials. The design of this knife is horrible. You cannot easily open it as the action is so far back on the handle. Closing it is just as awkward. Buy yourself any other assistant opening knife and you will be better served.
Activation button is placed in rear requiring two hands for good control while opening. Retraction is near impossible in one motion. The may be the most un-ergonomic and counter intuitive design that I've seen. Save your money for something better.
It doesn't work very well. Will not retract automatically, have to drag it back all the way in.
Quality and action of this knife was poor, not up to the standards of BUDK BOF3664
This is the worst knife I ever paid for. It is unsafe, the design is very bad for a knife. I sure would not pay the price for one again.
The positioning of the forward eject thumbpiece makes this knife difficult to use. The ejection mechanism is too close to the end of the knife and it's hard to hold and operate at the same time without dropping the knife. Also, the mechanism seems to be binding up with use, and the blade won't slide forward all the way to fully locked open position. I'm going to try to improve this knife's performance with some well placed lube. I think you get what you pay for. With this model Schrade knife, not much.
Bought for speed of blade delivery but, it takes 2 hands to release it and by then you could be dead. Release whould be on top of the knife and easy to operate with same hand thumb. With the release located at the very back end of the knife you could easily drop it just releasing the blade. What A Bummer!!!
We won't be able to ship this item until we receive more stock. But don't worry, we've found a similar item that's ready to ship now.
