Best Air Rifle for Deer Hunting: Top High-Powered Pellet Guns

By Adelia Ladson

Over the years, air rifles have come a long way from the iconic Red Ryder BB gun. With the sheer power generated and velocities achieved with today’s air guns, they offer so much more than just backyard plinking and pest control. They have evolved into accurate hunting rifles capable of taking down deer.

How To Choose a Deer Hunting Air Rifle

When you’re looking for a hunting rifle, first and foremost, you need to look for one that’s comfortable when you hold and aim it. You also want a good quality scope for quick target acquisition included in the package. The cocking mechanism should be easy, and the trigger pull should be smooth. All of these qualities can also be applied to choosing a good air rifle for hunting. The only other things to consider when choosing would be that you make sure the airgun is powerful enough with a high fps to take down a deer and what kind of power source you want. Although, it’s strongly recommended that a pre-charged pneumatic pump rifle is the best.

Deer Hunting Facts

Here are some things that you should know about deer hunting with a high-powered air rifle. These are things that have to be considered before you go out.

Caliber

You can’t use a low caliber pellet to effectively and humanely drop a deer. The caliber needs to be at least .35 and above. Your air rifle also needs to be able to fire upwards of 350 fps and your state’s laws may actually require it.

Local Hunting Laws

Always check your state and local hunting laws because some areas may not allow deer hunting with air rifles. Some laws to look for are what are the caliber and power-source requirements for the air rifle. Also, is there a specific season reserved for airgun hunting? Your fish and game office should be able to answer your questions.

Range of Gun

Since, an air rifle isn’t as powerful as a traditional rifle, you do need to get closer to your quarry to drop it. Some, hunters think this an advantage because they are able to use them during short range weapons seasons. However, when you’re shopping for an air rifle for deer hunting, you need to check out the range of the airgun and try to get the most for your money.

What Is the Most Powerful Deer Hunting Air Rifle?

There are air rifles out on the market that are specifically designed for hunting larger game like deer, antelope and even mountain lion. Here are some of the most powerful hunting air rifles that I’ve found.
