Sword was sharp but it did not go all the way to the tsuba. Also there were blemishes on the tsuba, scabbard, and Blade.
but keep in mind that a good samurai sword used to cost as much as 1,000 spears! so therefore samurai would not go clashing blades as you've perhaps seen in movies. The perfect battle according to the samurai was the unsheathing of the sword and dispatching of the opponent in one fluid motion, with no blade contact at all.
The original construction of the samurai sword had a hard steel outside for sharpness and soft steel inside for flexibility.
Damascus steel does this same thing in that it is hard and soft steel pounded together. A story tells that this is how the Damascenes of old would construct their blades.
So if you are looking for swords to spar with I would recommend wooden weapons, but if you like to cut things up, like the people on the video, this sword performs splendiferously.
