Self defense weapons constitute an interesting category. Many of them have to tread a line between efficacy and lethality, but they still need to be effective at incapacitating an assailant. That being said, there are many effective instances of self defense weapons yet. We will cover some of the best of these here.

Brass knuckles, also known as knuckle dusters, are brass (or some other metal alloy) that rides in the palm of the hand and which brace the user’s knuckles. Brass knuckles prevent the fist from deforming on contact with an intended target and on top of that, create a smaller, harder surface area for contact with a target. On top of that, they also protect the user’s fist from damage arising from contact with the target. This makes them highly effective as self defense weapons, though they are not legal in some jurisdictions.

Expandable batons, sometimes also known as night sticks, are collapsible batons that can be extended when needed. This makes them highly discrete, but it also gives them the flexibility to deliver blows nearly as effective as fixed batons. The smaller profile makes them easier to conceal and transport, however. They are lightweight and easy to conceal but still offer a strong mechanical advantage when used as a self defense weapon.

A shillelagh is a traditional Irish walking stick that can also be used as a striking implement. They can be highly effective as self defense weapons because they are lightweight and double as walking sticks, so they are not inherently weapons. Because they are primarily walking sticks, you might be able to get away with carrying one in places where other self defense weapons are not permitted. However, it is also the case that they can be used to deliver powerful blows, like a baton, making them potentially effective.

Both sword canes and self defense umbrellas, like sword umbrellas, are special types of self defense weapons that conceal a blade within the shaft either of a cane or an umbrella. They are highly discreet, which makes them ideal for carrying in crowded places where it might be more difficult or inadvisable to carry other self defense weapons. This discretion makes them highly valuable. Also, because the cane or umbrella itself can be used as a striking implement, you have the option of using non-lethal force. At the same time, the concealed blade offers you a last-ditch option if the chips are ever really down.

A slapper is a unique self defense weapon that usually consists of a weighted leather strap, with a weight on one or both ends. A slapper can be an effective deterrent to an assailant because, believe it or not, a good amount of force can be driven through one when the blow is landed on a sensitive area. There are two other things about slappers that make them effective as self defense weapons: they are discreet, which makes them ideal for carry in crowded places, and they are unimposing. They also give you the ability to leverage nonlethal force to discourage a would-be attacker.

A monkey’s fist is basically a complex knot wrapped around a large piece of lead or steel shot or core. Traditionally these were used by sailors as weapons known as “slungshots”. Today, they can be highly effective self defense weapons when used in one of two ways. One is by swinging the monkey’s fist by the tail end, in the traditional manner. The other is to enclose the monkey’s fist in your own fist, thereby adding mass to it that can help you land more powerful blows. In both cases, a monkey’s fist can be discreet, unintimidating, and still effective at incapacitating an attacker, much in the same manner as a slapper.

Lastly, we have pepper ball pistols, which use compressed gas to fire pepper balls at attackers. They can be highly effective at discouraging assailants, and the one massive advantage these have over other self defense weapons is range. There are instances in which you don’t want a hostile target to close the gap with you, but in all cases mentioned here, the self defense weapons covered require you to be fairly close to an attacker. In the case of a pepper ball pistol you can deter a would-be attacker from quite a ways away. They are less discreet and more complex than the other self defense weapons mentioned here, but for the advantage of keeping distance between you and a hostile target, that compromise on discretion can be well worth it.
