I grew up using this knife and it was fantastic. Don't listen to rusty down there, because yes it will rust but it's NOT STAINLESS it's better, Carbon steel which will rust if not taken care of, this is a knife you actually have to take care of and the black (which is not rust, actually helps prevent it meaning you actually want it) is to be expected and adds a wonderful used charm to the whole thing, it will not hurt you trust me. This knife will last outlast you and your kids if you take care of it, and by take care I just mean dry it as soon as you wash it and maybe put a little oil on it every now and then if it makes you feel better. This knife is better than most of all this stainless steel junk they use for kitchenware nowadays. If you would like to argue go research your steel. Great knife, great price! Buy the whole set.

A classic knife Reviewed by Morgan Marmitt on Nov 27, 2013   5 out of 5

I have one of these and love it, as long as you make sure to dry the blade off before putting it away in the block you wont have any rust issues. The carbon steel blade is easy to sharpen to a razor edge and after a few days the blade will have a nice black patina to it. When it does rust a little scrubbing and oiling will clean it up until the patina will reform.

Worst knife I ever owned, a true piece of junk. Reviewed by John Mann on Oct 27, 2013   1 out of 5

I purchased this knife to help my wife in the kitchen. When the knife came in ,I opened the package and gave it to my wife.It had black smudges all over the blade, both sides. The next day my wife gave me the knife back. Both sides of the knife were covered in RUST. I called BUDK, customer service and they ( as the great company they are ) replaced the knife promtly. I recieved the new knife and my wife washed it again, and again, both sides of the blade were totally covered with RUST. The rust won't wash off at all. THIS IS THE WORST PIECE OF JUNK I EVER HAD AND BUDK SHOULDN'T HANDLE THIS PRODUCT. IT WILL RUIN THEIR REPRETATION. on both sides of the blade. I told mt wife to wash it good and the black markswould be gone. The next day she gave me the knife back and said she couldn't use it. The knife not only still had the black smudges on itbut, now it was all covered in RUST and it wouldn't wash off.
