History of the Challenge Coin

History of the Challenge Coin

By Adelia Ladson

There are many stories about how and where Challenge Coins originated and, as they were never actually sanctioned by the military, historians debate their origin.

One of the most well-known stories is that, during WWI, a lieutenant presented specially minted coins to his flying squadron. One of the pilots placed his in a pouch around his neck and when he was shot down and captured by the Germans, they took all of his identification except the pouch. When he escaped, he was captured by the French and was able to prove his allegiance because one of his captors recognized the squadron’s insignia and knew that he was an American. Another story is that an American soldier, during WWII, used a coin to verify that he was a valid contact to the Philippine guerillas for their mission against the Japanese.

Regardless of where they originated, Challenge Coins have become military tradition in all branches of service, as well, as the United States Congress. Even non-military organizations have picked up the tradition of presenting them for accomplishments and commemorative events. We have several Challenge Coins, suitable for giving or presenting to someone special or deserving.

Our Christian Warrior Challenge Coin is a powerful reminder to carry in your pocket, your gear or your vehicle. On one side, in detailed relief, is the strong image of a Spartan helmet emblazoned with a cross, bookended by the Alpha and Omega. On the obverse side, underneath three crosses, is the Bible verse Joshua 1:9. The coin is crafted of metal alloy with a black and antique brass finish. This coin is the perfect everyday carry for those warriors, who fight the day-to-day evil.

Of all the veteran challenge coins that I’ve seen, our Veteran Tribute Challenge Coin is really something. The gold, metal-alloy coin has a group of soldiers in 3D relief against a red, white and blue American Flag. Above the soldier flies an American Eagle and the words, “Freedom Isn’t Free.” On the opposite side are the words, “This We Will Defend. Duty, Honor, Country”, circling the outside edge, with “Veteran” on a banner of blue in the center. This challenge coin makes a great, heartfelt gift for those brave warriors, who have served our country.

If you’re looking for a suitable and meaningful memento for the life-changing event of Baptism, our Baptism Challenge Coin is perfect. The 3D relief, on one side, depicts, in intricate detail, the baptism of Jesus Christ and the words, “In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost.” The coin is crafted in metal alloy with a bronze finish and black accents. On the obverse side, highlighted in glossy black, is the Bible verse Acts 2:38 in 3D relief. What’s really special about this coin is that there is an open space, specifically, for engraving the name and date on the coin.

Our Fatherhood Challenge Coin is a special tribute to those men in our lives who’ve meant much to us. The gold-colored, metal-alloy coin has a beautiful portrait of a father and son fishing. On the opposite side, highlighted in glossy black, the Bible verse Proverbs 20:7 and an open space for engraving. For that special man in your life, it’s the gift for any occasion.
